How It’s Done
When scanning images such as photos, slides or negatives, we inspect, clean and then sort the images. We are very careful when cleaning. We do not use chemicals which can harm more than they help, especially on older format negatives.
Once the images are ready for scanning, we use a professional quality Epson Perfection scanner using Digital Ice Technology. This builds a record of defects in the image during the scanning process, then uses formulas to rebuild the missing information.
Whilst we do our best to maximise the quality of each and every image we scan, in some cases there is only so much that can be done. After scanning, we use advanced editing software to enhance and balance the scanned images before a final quality check. We use both Digital Ice and editing software in tandem, so that our skilled editors have the best possible images to work with. We do not just rely on computers.
All images are handled using non-static cotton gloves. In some cases we do not clean images, if we determine they are too delicate or too badly damaged. This is usually in the case of medium format negatives, as a result of their advanced age. We scan the images using Digital Ice, to remove fine dust and scratches. We scan slides, 35mm negatives, medium format negatives and 110 negatives to 2400 dpi, while photos are scanned at 1200 dpi.
